Fluxes are vital in ceramic production because they reduce the melting temperature of silica, which is the key glass-forming substance in glazes and clay bodies. By facilitating the development of a glassy layer, fluxes improve the melting and bonding processes during firing, enabling ceramics to reach maturity at lower kiln temperatures.
